Canvas
I paint the canvas of my child.
Hues of blue, grey, red and tan.
The form and technique - although quite wild
Bring love forth by mine own hand.
A simple stroke, of oil and water.
A splash of sky, a smear of shining sun,
There never was a night so odder
When what was divided became one.
I paint the stars in your eyes
And give glimmer to your skin
A synapse born, as one dies
Suddenly aware of you within.
Your room is ready, curtains are hung
The walls reflect the color of your genes
Every intricate helix, carefully strung
Your form, not always what it seems.
You are life, so life may keep you
You are love, so love may find you
You are light, so light may guide you
You are a mirror, so may remind you -
Of my heart, my earth and my sky
Of the stars, that light my own eye
Of the song, that sings of my soul
Of how time passed, for when I’m old.
We are all the canvas, all the paint
Spilled and messy, across life’s page
From within, your voice so faint
Beat against me, the world a cage. |
